ORLANDO, FL (May 8, 2013) — Healthcare leader Reed V. Tuckson, M.D., delivered the Opening Session keynote address at the SCAI 2013 Scientific Sessions. As immediate past executive vice president and chief of medical affairs for United HealthGroup, Dr. Tuckson’s remarks will focus on each physician’s accountability in providing consistent, patient-centered care in the accountable care era and the critical importance of continuous quality improvement.

“SCAI 2013’s Opening Session will truly ignite our meeting, highlighting the successes we have had to date, but in particular focusing on challenges and opportunities we face as a profession,” said Kenneth Rosenfield, M.D., FSCAI, co-chair of SCAI 2013. “Dr. Tuckson’s broad view of the current healthcare environment will offer a first-hand perspective most physicians do not hear every day and allow us to understand our evolving role in quality improvement more clearly.”

A graduate of Howard University, Georgetown University School of Medicine and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania’s general internal medicine residency and fellowship programs, Dr. Tuckson is now managing director of Tuckson Medical Connections. In his previous role as executive vice president and chief of medical affairs at UnitedHealth Group, Dr. Tuckson worked with the company’s diverse and comprehensive business units to improve the quality and efficiency of the health services provided to the 75 million members served by the organization worldwide.

Prior to joining UnitedHealth Group, Dr. Tuckson held leadership roles at the American Medical Association (AMA), the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science in Los Angeles and the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation. He was also the Commissioner of Public Health for the District of Columbia.

Dr. Tuckson is an active member of the prestigious Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. He served as the chairperson of its Quality Chasm Summit Committee and as a member of its Committee on the Consequences of Uninsurance.

“Dr. Tuckson’s experience affords him a unique perspective on the challenges that all healthcare providers and payers face in the changing healthcare system,” said Dr. Rosenfield.
