Individualized patient education sessions led by a pharmacist within 24 hours of an order for venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis appear to be associated with higher medication adherence and reduced patient refusal as a reason for omitted doses. Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital found that 73.7% of patients who received the educational intervention adhered to 100% of scheduled doses for VTE prophylaxis, compared with 62.4% for a control group.
