FRIDAY, July 27, 2018 (HealthDay News) — Gun murders are on the rise in the United States and are the most common type of murder, according to a QuickStats report published in the July 27 issue of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

Between 2010 and 2016, gun murders accounted for more than 70 percent of all homicides. Knives and other tools that cut or pierced were the second most common method of murder, and suffocation was the third.

Rates of all three types of murder were stable between 2010 and 2014, but gun murders rose 31 percent between 2014 to 2016, from 11,008 to 14,415. Rates of the other two top methods of murder were flat between 2014 and 2016.

In 2016, the number of gun murders was about 30 times higher than suffocation murders (502) and about eight times higher than knife murders (1,781).
